UK Independence Party

For Newbury & West Berkshire

Your UKIP Parliamentary Candidate

Local Newbury man David Black is to contest the West Berkshire seat at the General Election.
David has been a member of UKIP since its early beginnings in 1993.  David tells us in his own words why he is standing for UKIP.

“I believe that the ordinary people of West Berkshire are desperate to hear some common sense policies on the NHS, education, economy, immigration and local planning to name but a few. Yet there is very little policy difference between the three main parties. A vote for Conservative, Labour or Liberal Democrats is a vote for more of the same.  Only a vote for UKIP will produce real change.”

David has chosen to highlight three issues in his local campaign.

Maternity Facility for Newbury

Newbury is only going to increase in size over the next few years, with large housing developments in and around the town, yet there is still no provision for a maternity unit at the local hospital. It is unacceptable that Mums-to-be will remain faced with an anxious journey to large hospitals at Reading, Basingstoke or Oxford whatever the traffic conditions and whatever the weather.

David says, “Having brought up 4 daughters of my own who all now have families of their own, I know that for a woman in late pregnancy it is very stressful to have to contemplate a journey to another town to reach a maternity unit.  Having gone to the trouble of building a new hospital in Newbury, I have to question why a small midwife led maternity facility was not included here?”

Tuition Fees

As a retired teacher, David believes passionately that students should not be saddled with debt whilst at university. UKIP policy nationally is to restore the student grant and end tuition fees and David fully agrees.  He says, “I do not believe that students should have to pay for higher education, let alone be faced with an increase in the tuition fees. If you or a member of your family aspires to go to university I urge you to consider this when voting.”

The current review into university funding will not be published until after the General Election and both the Conservatives and Labour Party are sitting on the fence.  Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats have announced that they would scrap tuition fees, but not fully until 2015! David has already signed the National Union of Students Pledge highlighted on the right of this page.

Local Planning

“Newbury’s largest single housing application ever, the racecourse development, is going ahead despite much protestation from the local community. It seems to me that local people no longer feel part of the planning process. Time and again , the local newspaper reports that a planning application is going ahead despite local concerns.”

UKIP believes that the regional tier of government created by John Major’s Conservatives under a previous EU Treaty and subsequently expanded by this Labour Government has destroyed the link between local council and central government. Regional government controls housing and planning, yet no one in this tier of government is voted in directly and the structure is too remote from local people.

UKIP would scrap regional government and return power to local democratic control. Moreover, local people would be free to call a binding referendum on any major local issue such as a large scale planning scheme.

Restoring British Sovereignty

David wants to see Britain replace its EU membership with a free trade agreement.

UKIP will continue in its campaign for the UK withdrawal from the EU.  A clear majority of people in the UK are now in favour of this.  David believes that the best people to govern Britain are the British people themselves, free from interference from Brussels. He points out that the main parties have shown nothing but contempt for our democracy.  He says

“They have all promised the British people a say on the EU and our relationship with it, yet they have all broken their promises.  Gordon Brown promised a say on the EU constitution then changed his mind once it was renamed as the Lisbon Treaty.  Nick Clegg sat on the fence and his party did not even vote when this important document was debated in the House of Commons and David Cameron’s Cast-Iron guarantee faded rapidly after the European Elections. This is exactly why trust has been eroded in politics. They promise one thing and then do another.”
