Immigration

Cutting immigration is  the number one issue for both Labour and Tory voters, a poll reveals. (Telegraph, February 2009)

Under Labour, mass immigration has already added 3.5 million people to the population.  The office of National Statistics states that our population will exceed 70 million by 2029.  Two thirds of this increase will come from immigration. The UK Independence Party is calling for a five-year freeze on immigration into Britain to sort out the mess.

UKIP policies on immigration are common sense, not racist, and about management and control, not anti-immigrant.

Britain can only regain control of immigration by leaving the EU and reclaiming control of her borders. Free of the EU, UKIP will apply strict visa controls and the Australian-style points system to all citizens including EU citizens, not just non-EU citizens. This is a vital distinction; other parties can do NOTHING about EU citizen numbers.

UKIP says recent research shows that 80% of people polled agreed to the statement, “We must control immigration even if this means leaving the EU”.

In the same poll, conducted by Communicate Research (July 2007), nearly 70% of respondents believed that “our commitment to the EU means we can no longer control immigration”.

Europe

UKIP is the only moderate party that advocates leaving the EU and restoring democratic control to Westminster. Today, the Labour, Liberal Democrats and Conservative parties are all 100% committed to our continued membership of this political union and they would rather the issue was not discussed.

Gordon Brown has refused the promised referendum despite his manifest pledge. The Lib Democrats also broke their referendum promise by abstaining from a vote on the Lisbon Treaty in Parliament and the Tories broke their cast iron guarantee of a referendum.  David Cameron’s promise to amend some of the terms of the Lisbon Treaty is not deliverable when the other 26 countries will not permit such action.  .

Criminal Justice

Crime is out of control in Britain. Crime, especially violent crime, is on the increase. Despite their arrogant boast over ten years ago, Labour has neither been tough on crime, nor on the causes of crime.

UKIP believes that the Human Rights Act has been an unmitigated disaster for fighting crime. The police force has been demoralised by political correctness, bureaucracy and too much central Government control. All of this has interfered with operational effectiveness, and damaged public confidence in the police, as well as leading to a feeling of disillusionment with many serving officers.

Economy

Public borrowing will rise to £175 billion this year (Chancellor, Budget 2009) and will be virtually the same next year at £173 billion.  As the three old parties struggle to find ways of cutting the deficit, our EU Membership costs would be a good starting point.

Treasury statistics show that the UK’s net contribution to the EU will increase from £4.8 billion this year to £6.4 billion in 2010/11, the equivalent of £257 per household.  £6.4 billion saved immediately by leaving the EU.  The UK is facing massive debt, so every penny counts.

Moreover, the Taxpayers Alliance have identified associated costs of £120 billion per annum for the privilege of being in the EU.  Even if this figure were only half that, it is still a completely unacceptable national expense because we get virtually nothing for it.

The UK will be stronger if it controls currency, taxes, regulations, energy and industrial policies.  In the EU, we are not free to negotiate our own trade agreements.  EU State Aid rules prevent us from helping  British industry; we could not assist Rover and EU rules on Northern Rocks’ problems had to be publicised, causing a bank run on it.

UKIP will cut the financial waste of our EU membership and allow our companies to begin trading free of EU over-regulation and free to re-embrace the fast growing Commonwealth countries such as India.
